Autonomous Energy Supply for an Island

Bachelor's Project: Sustainable Energy System Design

Renewable Energy Island Concept

Project Description

This successfully completed Bachelor's project involved the development of a comprehensive concept for making an island's energy supply fully autonomous and sustainable. The core objective was to design a system based exclusively on renewable energy sources, capable of meeting the entire energy demand of the island's inhabitants and its tourism industry.

The project also considered integration with existing infrastructure like transportation, ensuring a holistic approach to sustainable island development.

Challenges

Variable Energy Demand

Accurately forecasting energy needs that fluctuate daily and seasonally, especially with the impact of tourism on demand patterns.

Technological & Economic Viability

Selecting an optimal mix of renewable technologies and energy storage solutions that would be both technically reliable and economically feasible.

Comprehensive Risk Management

Identifying and planning for a wide range of potential risks, including high initial investment costs, political shifts, inaccurate weather predictions, and ensuring public acceptance of the project.

Solution & Methodology

As the designated Risk Manager for the team, I played a crucial role in ensuring the project's feasibility and robustness. My approach was systematic and proactive:

  • In-depth Risk Analysis: Led the creation of a detailed risk matrix, quantifying the probability and impact of each potential threat, with specific mitigation strategies for high-risk items.
  • Mitigation Planning: Proposed solutions including future-oriented planning, energy storage systems for peak loads, local material sourcing, and public opinion surveys for community buy-in.
  • Structured Project Management: Actively contributed to overall project planning, including development of the Project Structure Plan (PSP) and Gantt chart for clear task definition and tracking.
